From The Painting Table #12

Here we go again with another collection of newly painted minis for your perusal.

Starting with this classic Dwarf Lord min for Warhammer fantasy.  Covered in Runic Gromril armour this is one tough cookie.

Next up we have these three objective markers to use with my 40K space marine army.  I believe they were originally from the 3rd ed boxed set, although I got these with some other bits off ebay.  The little side coils were painted with boltgun metal, like the rest of the piece and the given a thin coat of blue wash, it's not something that I've tried before, and I'm quite pleased with the final effect.

Moving away from GW and to Mantic games now and another merc for deadzone.  This time the kickstarter exclusive Project Oberon.  Project Oberon belong to the species 'the nameless' who are among my favourite races in the warpath universe, hopefully we'll see a few more of them in deadzone at some point.

Onto flames of war now with this Soviet T34/85 obr 1943 from Battlefront.

And finally this German Sd.Kfz.22 armoured car from Zvezda's art of tactics range that I will also use for flames of war.  I've bought a few kits from the art of tactics range over the last few months and although this is the smallest of those it was also the biggest pain to build.  This was clearly due to the difficulties due to the shape of the vehicle, but I wouldn't advise just 'snap-fitting' this together like they suggest is possible.  With a little work however you can get a good result out of this cheap little kit.

Classical Ruined Temple

I was in the new 'The Range' store we have in my town the other day having a bit of a nosey around when I spied this fish tank ornament.  It was a couple of quid and I instantly decided to buy it as I've wanted a couple of bits of classical terrain for a while to accompany my ancient/mythological Greek collection.

Obviously it's the wrong colour, and there are some bubbles in it, but a very quick repaint and I have a rather nifty little terrain piece.

First Hobbit Miniatures & Some More Uruks

Some more painted figures for middle earth today, stating with the Hobbit himself Mr Bilbo Baggins;  A really nice little model (and I do mean little) he come with the option of carrying either sting or his walking stick, I think he looks better with the stick so thats what I've gone with.  Below is also the first piece of the goblin town scenary, just sprayed brown and then given a brown wash, it's come out rather well I think for little effort.

Next we have 10 of the goblins from the Hobbit starter set, all single piece models, but nicely detailed.  I still find it a bit odd they're very different from the Lord of the Rings goblins though.

And finally 6 metal Uruk-hai models including Lurtz, a captain, an archer and 3 berserkers, some formidable additions to my Isengard force.

Eldar Viper & 40K Ruins

Just a quicky today, a new Eldar Vyper Jetbike to show and a couple of pieces of gothic ruins.

The Vyper has had an extra heavy weapon slung underneath in the manner of a landspeeder.  And for 60pts can put out 6 strength 6 shots a turn, not to shabby at all.

The ruins are the old plastic set that origanally came in the 3rd edition boxed set.  I didn't put a lot of effort into these, just a quick spray in grey and the a covering in devlan mud, but its worked out I think.

Also as it happens this is my 200th post, I'm quite suprised that I've got this far to be honest, but thank you for reading, and heres to the next 200!

Dreadfleet - Leviathan Island & Flying Auxillaries

The latest few painted bits from dreadfleet today, no big ships, but one of the more interesting terrain pieces and the rather cool dragon and dirigible pieces.  I'm over half way through dreadfleet now I think, I have two more warships and the last major terrain piece nearing completion, including the heldenhammer (which has taken an awful lot of work).  Work is always very busy at this time of year, and I keep getting distracted, but I'm currently aiming to have it all done by the christmas holiday, but we will see.

Dino Skeleton Terrain

I recently bought a couple of toy dinosaur skeletons from poundland and have actually followed through on my intention to turn them into a couple of basic terrain pieces.  I didn't do much too them, simply stuck them to a piece of card painted green and flocked, and gave them a simple gyphon sepia wash.  It seems to have worked out alright, I'm not claiming they're fantastic, but for the price paid they will do the job nicely.

Dinosaur Skeletons

I had an hour to kill in the town center today and ended up milling around various shops, one of which was poundland, and I came out with two tubes containg plastic dinosaur skeletons.  One is marked as a Triceratops and one as a Tyranosaurus.

Obviously they cost a quid each,  which isn't bad I think, and my plan is to turn them into terrain pices for use in warhammer (now renamed as carnosaur and stegadon skeletons) and 40K (there's some dangerous stuff on those death worlds).

The Dinosaurs assembled and put next to a mantic revenant for scale

Now they're not fantastic, but what do you expect for a pound, and I do think a few monstrous skeletons will add to a battlefeild.  Also it will simply be nice to have a couple of new pieces of terrain, I rarely spend any money (or time) on terrain as I prefer to do the models, something I keep meaning to change but never quite getting there.

The plan, something like this on a flaocked base, possibly given a wash.

Dwarf Week - Plastic Dwarfs through the Ages & Dwarvish Terrain

A Late post today and a quick look ate GW plastic dwarfs thorugh the ages.  The pics below show the 5 generations of plastic dwarfs in my collection and one of the mantic dwarfs I got the other week from dwarf kings hold.

Ok, so left of the top picture we have the third edition single pose (although with 2 head options) dwarf.  He's not too bad considering his age, the biggest problem with him is that you have to put them in the diagonal slot to be able to rank up into a regiment.  Top pic middle is the next single pose dwarf from the 4th ed, in my opinion the worst of the lot, hes too fat, his beards to short and his hand's are too big.  They still in my army only because I already have them (they where vital to keep costs down back then) but now never get used.  The last model in the top pic is the single pose dwarf warrior from battle of skull pass at the beginning of 7th ed.  I quite like these guys and approve of the fact that when GW do single part models now adays they at least mix poses up on the sprue, which generates a much better looking regiment.

The second pic has on the left the original multi-part dwarf and my favorite out of the 6 models.  I like the options and the heads, and the fact that the seperate arms allow for easy conversions, my only issuse is the slightly oversized hands (which was a weird trend back then).  The middle model is the current multipart kit, they're not bad but the reason i prefer the previous version is that the way the hands take the weapons and the arms are moulded into the body mean that they're just not flexible enough, still maybe I'm just being picky.

And finally in the bottom left we have a mantic dwarf warrior, I do like these, but they don't really mtch with the GW ones, they're a lot bigger for a start, both in height and body.  I certainly wouldn't be happy mixing them in a regiment, if you wanted to use both you'd have to keep them in sperate units, but even then i'm not sure.

Also today a quick look at some of my dwarf themed terrain.

Nothing really out of the ordinary, some of the plastic 'Kings Wall' from battle of skull pass, the cardboard brewery buildings from the old grudge of drong camapaign pack and a rather cool fortified hold entrance made out of a sort of hard foam that I actually got given for free from my local GW (apparently they weren't allowed to use it any more as they had a new rule telling them to only use terrain they sold, which kinda makes sense if a bit OTT).  Its not loads, but its enough to give a dwarven feel to a battle.
